Who this course is for
If you're already comfortable with system design at a senior engineer level and want to reach the depth expected of a staff or principal engineer — precise reasoning about consistency tradeoffs, not just familiarity with buzzwords — this course is built for that jump. It builds on the System Design roadmap, so a solid senior-level foundation is assumed going in.
What you'll actually build
The course works through five staff-level problems, in order: reasoning precisely about consistency models and the CAP/PACELC tradeoffs rather than reciting them, designing consensus-based systems using Raft or Paxos from first principles, designing systems that degrade gracefully under partial failure instead of failing completely, studying real outage case studies and post-mortems to see how theory breaks down in practice, and practicing staff-level system design interviews and discussions. Every module pairs a concepts lesson with a hands-on exercise reasoning through a realistic distributed-systems scenario.
The capstone
You finish by producing a formal design document for a distributed system — the kind of document a staff engineer is actually expected to write and defend, not a whiteboard sketch. This is meant to be a real work sample you could bring into a staff-level interview loop.
Why this matters right now
This is the deep systems knowledge staff and principal engineers are expected to have, and it's specifically the gap between "can design a system that works" and "can design a system that survives real partial failure and defend every tradeoff in the design." The real outage post-mortem module exists because staff-level thinking is proven by how you reason about what actually broke, not just what should theoretically work.

What level of system design experience do I need before starting this course?
This builds on the System Design roadmap and assumes a solid senior-engineer-level foundation. It's specifically aimed at the jump from senior to staff-level depth, not an introduction to system design.
What subscription tier do I need?
Distributed Systems Design (Staff-Level) requires an Elite tier subscription, alongside a small number of other Elite-tier courses covering the platform's most advanced material.
How long does the course take?
28 hours across 6 modules — five core modules plus a capstone project — making it one of the longer courses on the platform. Each module pairs an 18-minute concepts lesson with a 35-minute hands-on exercise.
What do I actually build by the end?
A formal design document for a distributed system — the kind of artifact a staff engineer is expected to produce and defend, built as the capstone project.
Does this course include real interview practice?
Yes — Module 5 is specifically staff-level system design interview practice, and Module 4 studies real outage case studies and post-mortems to ground that practice in what actually goes wrong in production.
